You Go Girls!

Last weekend, I'll have you know us girls got out there...leveled the area, dug trenches, used brute strength, planted 3 different type of potatoes, made a fence, learned how to saw something (funny huh?), put up the garden markers and did it all less than 2 hours. It was really fun to be out there again. The night before i had to cut the potatoes, let them dry out and make sure there were eyes on each piece. I'm learning a lot!

To plant potatoes:

Keep in front of a sunny window a week before you plant.

Atleast a day before you plant, cut the potatoes in quarters but make sure there's a good eye for each piece.

Let them sit out and dry overnight on paper towels.

Plant potatoes cut side down 6-8 inches deep. Make trench 3 inches wide.

Only cover the potatoes with three inches of soil. wait till they sprout and then cover again.

I hope our potatoes grow!!!!!

Yeah Support!

Today was so fun and we had a great turnout! We had two families come that live in the community who just saw the sign and wanted to get involved! We also had two families from our church that came with their kids! At first, i didn't know what to do because we had never had that many people show up at the same time. So, it wasn't as organized as I would've liked bc there was still a lot of prep work that needed to be done. We were very productive today planting 3 different kinds of onions, parsley, radishes, lettuce, spinach, peas and carrots. At one point, I walked to the shed to get something and when I walked back, I had a sentimental moment, (sorry I'm such a girl) seeing everyone just working together, laughing, talking and enjoying themselves, it was a good "moment" . The kids got really involved planting and helping water the area. And, when they were done, they just went and played. It was a great set up! To everyone who came today, THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! It's amazing to see this project reaching the community and now I just can't wait to watch the garden grow! Next week, we only need to plant potatoes. The last of the b4 frost veggies. This will be an experience! I have to get the potatoes all ready at home this weekend to be ready to plant next Saturday. The plot is all ready to go, so the 17th planting will be fast. Then, we'll put the planting on hold until after the last frost . I'm really enjoying this and learning so much. We'll kick of the 42in42 event on MAY 22nd!!!! Mark your calendars! This will be the BIG planting day!

Finding Joy in the Small Things

Today was our first planting day. I have to say, I really enjoyed it...even more than I thought I would. I had never really gardened before but there was something satisfying and calming about it all. We planted strawberries, broccoli and cabbage today. At the beginning, it was just my little family and I loved seeing how much Jace wanted to help dig and how fascinated he was with the worms. It started out kind of windy but turned out to be perfect weather. I love doing anything outside and this was just the cream of the crop...Working together, enjoying the weather, serving and learning at the same time. It seems silly, but I even found satisfaction in the tiny little stake fence we built around the bed. I read a talk from one of the leaders of my church that talked about our desire to create. I've seen this in a lot of aspects of my life through organizing a work project, making cards, planning events, creating a welcoming home, making yummy dinners, sewing a new project, but never through a garden. I look forward to more sunny Saturday mornings where family and friends can get together to plant some simple seeds but find joy in doing it.

"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before.

Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty.

Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty..."
